The Great Emu War: A Powerful Lesson in Misaligned Business Goals
Three exhausted Australian soldiers wiped the stinging sweat from their eyes under the oppressive midday sun. Their muscles ached under the weight of their heavy machine guns, while thick dust clung to their bodies like a second skin, mixing with the unbearable 38-degree heat.
Heavier still the frustration, anger and resentment of pursuing their evasive yet completely hapless invading enemy force.
These few soldiers were expected to beat back an invasion of some 20,000 foes. Somehow, the huge enemy force hid from them - hid from them amongst the houses, farms and outbuildings that made up a small town called Campion in Western Australia.
Despite being huge in number, the enemy they faced was a vastly inferior force and yet were almost impossible to defeat. Major Meredith headed up the small task unit. He had heavily armed his men. 10,000 rounds of ammunition per man to feed their Lewis guns: a fully automatic machine gun capable of firing 600 rounds per minute.
The goal was to slaughter the enemy force & leave none of the occupying force alive. A month had passed though and still the enemy force ran them ragged. No matter how hard these men tried, they couldn’t make a dent in the opposition. It seemed like an impossible task and HQ’s patience was running thin.
Worst of all was the humiliation. The entirety of Australian journalism was watching this embarrassment unfold and reporting these men’s inadequacy back to the rest of the country. Their compatriots mocked them.
Eventually, the Western Australian government admitted defeat and allowed the enemy invasion to take over. They rolled over and gave up.
“They have the invulnerability of tanks,” a soldier reported.
One farmer who watched on said “it’s like trying to catch the wind.”
Who was this elusive enemy? 20,000 elite soldiers from the special forces?
No, they were emus. Yes, the massive flightless bird. These large birds had migrated to Campion and were destroying the crops. The government dispatched the military unit to cull the birds completely. Manpower, ammunition, effort and respect were all wasted in equal measure in what became known as ‘The Great Emu War of 1932’.
The lesson? The soldiers failed because their goals were unclear, misaligned, and inefficient for the problem at hand.
Why Lack of Clarity Dooms business owners and How to Fix It
Just like the soldiers, many adventurepreneurs struggle with misaligned goals. Without clear vision and purpose, it’s like sailing through thick fog without a compass—you may be moving, but you’re not getting anywhere.
Here’s what happens when you don’t have clarity:
You waste time and energy on tasks that don’t matter.
You feel overwhelmed, unsure if you’re heading in the right direction.
You constantly second-guess yourself and your decisions.
Nested Goals is the solution. It helps you avoid wasting time and effort on goals that aren’t aligned with who you are or what you want to achieve.
How Nested Goals Help You Overcome Business Struggles
Nested Goals is built on the idea that your goals don’t exist in isolation. They are shaped by:
Your deepest desires
Your strengths and beliefs
What’s going on in your life
Imagine waking up every day with a clear sense of purpose, knowing exactly what steps to take to achieve your vision. That’s what Nested Goals offers—it brings your scattered goals into sharp focus and aligns them with your values.
Nested Goals is made up of 7 components. Each must align with the others for success.
The 7 Key Components of Nested Goals for Entrepreneurial Success
Here are the 7 components of Nested Goals and examples of success at each stage:
Purpose Your purpose is the reason behind everything you do. It gives your life meaning. Without it, life can feel aimless. When you know your purpose, everything becomes clearer.
Values Values are the principles you hold most dearly, reflecting what’s important to you. Knowing your values makes decision-making easier because you know what matters most.
Vision Your vision is a picture of what you want your life to look like. A good vision includes health, wealth, love, and happiness. It should stretch what you think is possible.
Long-Term Goals These are your 1–5 year objectives. They serve as stepping stones to achieving your vision.
Short-Term Goals Short-term goals are the weekly or quarterly milestones that help you reach your long-term goals. They should be measurable and achievable.
Process Goals Focus on the process and the steps you take every day. Martial artists focus on perfecting one move. Rock climbers become obsessed with mastering individual climbs. What’s your process?
Character This is who you wish to become—the best version of yourself. By aligning with the rest of your goals, you can become that person today by putting in the work, moment by moment.
Avoid These 2 Common Goal-Setting Mistakes business owners Make
Most business owners make two critical mistakes when setting goals:
Not having all components
No short-term goals = no progress
No clear vision = moving in the wrong direction
No clear values or purpose = feeling disconnected from your goals
Misaligned goals
Many entrepreneurs pursue someone else’s goals, live someone else’s purpose, or follow processes that don’t work for them.
It’s like wearing someone else’s shoes—no matter how hard you try to walk, they pinch and hurt with every step.
Nested Goals ensures that all components align, so you’re not wasting time chasing someone else’s dream.
How to Discover and Align Your Nested Goals for Maximum Success
I help my clients find clarity by having them rate each component of their Nested Goals out of 10. A 10 means you’re crystal clear and fully aligned, while a 1 means you lack clarity or connection. From there, I hand-pick exercises designed to fill in the gaps and realign your goals.
Just like a pointillist painting, where individual dots form a clear picture, the more data points you have, the clearer your goals become.
